Dr. Randy Martin: I recently talked with Jared Fogle, best known as “the Subway guy.” His weight loss culminated in 245 lbs. lost—almost two of me!—in just one year. He has a truly inspirational story, and one we can all learn something from.
Jared Fogle, spokesperson for Subway, started putting on weight when he was about seven years old. By age 20, he had severe cases of both sleep apnea and edema.
“Some scary things were happening to me that a 20-year-old should not be having,” Fogle says. “At that point I said, ‘you know what? Enough is enough; I need to find ways to change my life.’”
Unfortunately, as for many people, the process wasn’t easy. Fogle had many failed attempts before he found an approach that worked for him. He says that he, too, is surprised that eating Subway sandwiches made such an impact. Now, he exercises regularly and recently completed the ING New York City Marathon. “I had never run more than a mile in my life before that year. So, it was a big challenge but something I was really excited about.”
Wanting to help keep kids from going down the path of obesity, Fogle has created The Jared Foundation. The foundation offers various programs, such as Jared’s Challenge and Jared’s Joggers, to help kids lead healthier lives. The goal is to find out what motivates and works best for them. “Hopefully, through more exercise and better eating habits, we’re going to be able to curb this whole childhood obesity problem,” says Fogle.
“When people lose weight, they gain many benefits,” says Jasmin Theard, exercise physiologist at the Piedmont Health & Fitness Center. “Most importantly, people lower their risk of heart disease, strokes and certain types of cancer.”
Theard says the strategy Jared took to losing weight will also work for most people. “We tell our clients that the key is to get moving. You don’t need to run a marathon, but you can start simply by just walking. Then, as you feel stronger, you can work your way up to strength training and more demanding cardio workouts to continue to see weight loss results.”
Dr. Randy Martin: Jared lost an amazing amount of weight – it’s truly inspirational. It didn’t happen overnight and it wasn’t because of any advice he received from friends, family or physicians. He lost the weight because he decided to change his life by making a commitment to his health. Make a commitment to your health and you can tell your own success story!
